2003 Mercedes Benz C240 Drive Cycle

My 2003 Mercedes Benz C240 failed the smog check because the catalyst monitor was not ready. I need to know how to perform a drive cycle on this car.

Answer:

Below you will find the Drive Cycle required to complete (or make READY) the emission monitors for your 2003 Mercedes Benz C240; including that of the Catalyst Monitor.

Please take extra caution while performing the drive cycle on public roadways. Drive cycles can be difficult to follow under normal driving conditions. If you feel you may be unable to perform the MBZ C240 Drive Cycle below yourself, please seek assistance from a certified smog check repair center or Mercedes Benz Dealer.

You must begin the Mercedes Benz C240 Drive Cycle from a cold start (engine coolant temperature should be below 122F) and the fuel tank 1/4 to 3/4 full. Also do not turn on the ignition key until you are ready to begin the drive cycle.

A. Start the engine and idle while the transmission is in D for 2 1/2 minutes with the air condition compressor and rear window defroster ON. Your MBZ is now testing the oxygen sensor heater circuits, air injection pump and the EVAP purge function.

B. Next, turn off the A/C and rear defroster and accelerate your C240, smoothly, to 55 mph. The system is now checking for any misfires and also ensuring the EVAP system is purging properly. Drive at 55 miles per hour for approximately 3 minutes.

C. Decelerate to 20 mph (without pressing on the brakes). EGR function, O2 sensor function and air injection systems are being checked.

D. Accelerate back to 55 mph and hold speed steady for 5 minutes.

E. Decelerate to a stop, once again without braking.

F. Allow to idle for 3 minutes. Turn off ignition.

G. Drive cycle complete. Re-check the readiness of the emission monitors. If any monitors are still not ready repeat steps B, C, and D.
