Can I register a 1994 Toyota Tercel from Nevada in California.

I am looking to purchase a 1994 Toyota Tercel with an automatic transmission. I live in California & the car is registered in Nevada. The seller tells me it's a Federal car 49 states legal.

Will I have a problem passing smog & registration with this car in California? It is a 1994 Toyota Tercel with an automatic transmission. The seller says its 49 state legal and was registered as a government federal car. I don't want to buy a car I won't be able to register. I do understand I need to pass a smog test at a shop but I've never heard of this so I want to make sure. I know California can be tough on this stuff & I just don't want to waste money on a car I won't be able to drive. As far as I know, the car is all stock. The seller hasn't changed anything except normal maintenance items. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me on this car purchase, thanks. Dan


Answer:		It's true, there is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission requirements. And, for the most part California is stricter. However, a USED vehicle, which has all the Federal required emission components (has not been tampered with), can pass the California smog inspection process and be legally registered in this state. posted by SmogTips Support
