Mercedes Benz S600 Failed Smog Due To Wiring Harness

Since passing the last smog inspection in 2015, the check engine light on my MBZ S600 has come on and the dealer has verified that engine is fine. However the problem was traced to a degraded wiring harness that is no longer available, and Fletcher Jones Service has been unable to do any kind of custom repair.

Is there anyway to obtain a waiver for the check engine light only? Specifically for the light and not a waiver for the smog check?

Answer:

You will need to contact the State's Hard to Find Parts Locator. They might be able to help you find the harness needed to get your S600 to pass the smog check.

If they are unable to find you a new (or used) harness, they may be able to issue you a "Limited Parts Exemption". In most cases the needed parts are found. You may contact the State Smog Check Parts locator by calling 800–622–7733. If they are unable to help you, you may seek assistance from the state smog referee’s office in the form of a waiver.

There is no specific waiver for the check engine light. The check engine light inspection is part of the smog inspection process. You may be able to obtain an exemption for the entire emissions inspection.
