Smog Check Repair

1988 Nissan Pathfinder failed ignition timing inspection.

My Pathfinder runs great, but when I try to set the ignition timing with the timing light gun the mark is off. It's at 35 BTDC not 12 (where it should be). What could cause this?

Answer:

Your Nissan Pathfinder is probably showing the ignition timing off 20 degrees because the timing belt has jumped off one notch but the ignition distributor has been corrected far enough to allow your trucks engine to run efficiently; this is one scenario, probably the only scenario unless your looking at a notch which is not the actual timing mark but rather a deep scratch on the crankshaft pulley.
