Should our 1976 GMC Pickup have a catalytic converter?

We just bought a 1976 GMC pickup w/ a 350/350 and duel gas tanks and noticed that it does not have a catalytic converter. It has straight duel exhaust so we were wondering if it does need a catalytic converter if having 2 (one for each side) would make the emissions better. We live in CA so I know the standards are high but are they different for older cars such as ours? Any info on what type of equipment our truck needs to pass would be great. Thanks

Answer:

According to our emission application guide your 1976 GMC Pickup should be equipped with a single Catalytic Converter. Adding a second CAT would be considered a tamper (even if it helps lower emissions). You should have one CAT installed in order to pass the smog check.
