General Smog Check

What is a drive cycle for a Chrysler Town & Country?

I have a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country (3.3 engine, 6 cylinder) Check engine light had been on for about a month. Registration time came up & required SMOG Cert. Had van scanned for problem and found it needed ERG valve replaced. After having EGR put in I took it to have a Smog test the next day. Results said "failed the MIL/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self test". The smog tech told me my van failed cause the battery was recently disconnected and needed to be driven on afull drive cycle then try again. He told me to look on internet for drive cycle of my paticular vehicle because every vehicle is differnt and computer will know if it was driving in drive cycle. I tried searching for drive cycle but didnt come up with anything? Today is monday and van was tested last Wednesday. Should I try it now? Help.

ANSWER:

The specific drive cycle for your Chrysler is complex. The main points to follow are these:

We recommend driving for at least 200 miles in a variety driving conditions; traffic, freeway, city, stop and go. Drive with 1/4 to 3/4 tank of gas, and in all sorts of driving conditions in order to get the required emission monitors to set.

You'll need to make at least one trip where you park the vehicle for at least 1 hour and then restart it. This is required to set the EVAP monitor.
