Emissions Component

1984 Mustang SVO 2.3 LTR Turbo Engine Change

I would like to install an 83 or 84 model 302 c.i. engine in this Ford Mustang. I would assume the EGR valve, O2 sensor, catalytic converter and all nec. switches and sensors needed for computer operation are required, but would anything else be? Also could a carburetor fueled engine legally be installed and if so what equipment would be necessary. Where can I get a list of specs and required equipment for a specific vehicle such as this? The list like the smog stations use. Thank You ,Tom

Answer:

You'll need to purchase a shop manual for the 1983 or 1984 Ford Mustang 302 ci engine in order to get all the data you'll need to perform this engine change. The BAR will need to smog check your Mustang after the engine change to ensure the job was done properly and all the emission components match that of a 302 ci engine, including the computer and exhaust system (not including muffler), plus your Ford Mustang's emissions are below limits. As far as replacing your current engine with a carburated version, we can not recommend doing that. The BAR frowns upon degrading an engine's technology.
