1996 Cadillace Eldorado NorthStar. Oxygen Sensor problem!

After installing a new sensor the check engine light still stays on and the on board computer is still throws the same oxygen sensor trouble code! Any idea what I can do or what the problem might be?

Answer:

We have to recommend you ensure you're changing the correct oxygen sensor first. Once you've verified you should then trace your Cadillac Eldorado's oxygen sensor wiring from the computer to the sensor or vise-versa. You must ensure that voltage (.5v) is present at the oxygen sensor output terminal while your Cadillac's engine is running, and that the .5v is getting to the engine control computer (ECC). The .5v is should actually be a rapidly fluctuating .1 to .8 volts, but for simply testing purposes just look for an average .5 volts and try to trace it back to the on-board computer. With the proper diagrams you'd be able to trace the oxygen sensor wiring to the ECC harness. There you can check for voltage and ensure that the oxygen sensor signal is in fact getting to the ECC.

2ND QUESTION: Thank you very much. I am not sure but it seems that there are 2 oxygen sensors and I didn't know that. Can you tell me where they are located? I changed the one that is located below and behind the engine.

2ND ANSWER: Sounds like you may have replaced the second oxygen sensor. The two oxygen sensors your Cadillac should have are one for Bank 1 (this is the engine side which cylinder number one is located) and Bank 2 (engine side which cylinder 2 is located). You'll need to find out which one you replaced and which one need to be replaced. Using a OBD II trouble code extractor you'll find out. The Scan tool will indicate the trouble code and the Cylinder Bank it belongs to.
