General Smog Check

2001 Honda Civic - Service Engine Soon light is on.

My 2001 Honda Civic registration is due and includes a smog check. It has approx. 65,000 miles on it. The "service engine soon" light is on. Would that be considered grounds for an automatic "fail test" on the visual inspection or could it possibly pass if good results are received on the functional part of the smog test even if the "service engine soon" light is on? Do I need to make sure light is off before test? If so, how do i do that without resetting? I do not want to reset and lose the current data resulting in a fail due to the reset.

Answer:

Contrary to public belief, the Service Engine Soon light being illuminated anytime during the smog inspection is automatically a smog failure. Vehicle manufacturers have placed the Service Engine Soon light inside the passenger compartment to inform the driver there has been or is an engine or drive train malfunction.

Our recommendation is you have your Honda Civic diagnosed by a certified smog check repair station. Along with the Service Engine Soon light being illuminated, there are stored computer trouble codes in the engine control computer which the smog station will be able to retrieve and use for diagnosing purposes. These codes will direct the smog technician during his/her diagnosis.

As far as turning off your Honda Civic's service engine soon light, this can only be done once the required repairs are made. You can reset the light and have it turn off, but you'll also be resetting the emissions monitors which require an average 2 weeks of regular driving in order to reset.
