I own a 1996 VW. The tags are expired. Can I apply for CA vehicle buyback?

1996 VW GTI VR6 My vehicle's registration expired in June 2011. It failed a smog check in August 2011. Am I eligible now for the vehicle retirement program?

Answer:

For vehicles which have failed a smog check, the BAR allows the maximum of 121 days of vehicle registration expiration during the 24 month period prior to the application date of vehicle retirement assistance. If your VW's tage expired tags in June, you would have exceeded the allowable registration expiration period, and your vehicle would not be eligible for CAP (consumer assitance program, both repair and buy back).
