Failed Smog Test

Is my VW Vanagon a Gross Polluter or not?

1980 VW Vanagon. Vehicle failed smog inspection as gross polluter on first test. On second test, at gold shield station, it failed again but this time not as gross polluter. I am having work done to fix the issue but am I required to take it to a gold shield station for the third test or is it no longer classified as a gross polluter?

Also my veahicle did not come standard with O2 sensor or EGR but were added after the fact. Since they did not come standard on this year/model are they still required by CA emissions? Thanks for your help.

Answer:

To the best of our knowledge once a vehicle is classified as a Gross Polluter it stays as a GP vehicle, regardless of whether or not it passes in the future. You do however have a choice of where to get your VW smogged. GP vehicles can get certified at Test Only smog centers or Gold Shield smog stations.
