Infiniti FX 35 will be leaving the country during smog check period

I have an Infiniti 2004 FX 35. I will be on a work assignment out of the country from May to Septmeber. My vehicle registration's renewal w/ the mandatory smog will be expired (July 2012) by the time I return back to California.

Can I bring my car in early for the smog test in May rather than July? If so, what do I need to do to bring my car in early?

Timing will be everything here. You will need to consult the DMV. A California smog check certificate is valid for 90 days. Depending on how early the DMV will allow you to send in your payment you may or may not meet the 90 day deadline. Contact the Califoria DMV at (800) 777-0133.
