Failed Smog Test

Ford Mustang failed smog check do I need a certified smog check repair station?

I purchased a used 1995 Ford Mustang from a private seller and the vehicle was ordered to a Smog Test Only Center for a Test Only smog inspection. The seller took the car in and the Ignition Timing and high HC and NO failed; is it mandated by law to get the problems fixed by a certified smog check repair technician/station? The individual who did the smog test made some recommendations but if I take to a regular shop that is not smog check repair certified would I encounter any problems when I have a smog retest done and more importantly will I get into any problems with the State of California?

Answer:

The law does require that your Ford Mustang be repaired either at a certfied smog check repair facility or by the owner of the vehicle, personally. The main reason for this law is to protect the consumer. When smog check repairs are made by a non-smog check certifed mechanic the State will not support (investigate) any problems which may arise due to improper repairs or any disputes. Having your Ford Mustang repaired at a certified smog test repair center will allow you to contact and get support from the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repairs) should the need arise.
