Bringing from Florida, 2003 Jeep Liberty with 110,572 miles and check engine light is on.

First, GREAT SITE! Thanks. I’m bringing from Florida, my 2003 jeep liberty. I paid $13,000 in 2004 and it has110,572 miles. The check engine light is on. Has been for 5 years. Some sort of a return emission / vapor line possibly has a hole in it (I was told) it’s not the gas cap. I understand there is a $$ cap on how much I’m going to have to pay to get the car ‘up to smog pass status’. My question: Does the repair $$ to fix the check engine light go towards the $$ I must pay to get the car to pass smog. My concern: I don’t want to pay TWICE for the same repair… if that makes sense. Is there a site that shows the breakdown on how much I have to pay?

Truth is since you are bringing your Jeep into California from out of state you are not eligible for government assistance. Unfortunately there is no limit to getting your Jeep to pass the smog test. In fact there is no limit to getting any vehicle to pass the smog test. What California does offer is $500.00 in free smog repairs for qualifying vehicle owners. If after the $500.00 is spent on repairs and the vehicle still fails (if you're low income) the state will give you a one time smog check waiver. By the way, an illuminated check engine light will cause an emissions test failure regardless of why its on or illuminated.
