Failed Smog Test

I have a 1979 MGB that failed smog test only X2

I have a 1979 MGB that failed smog test only X2. I was told my carb

could not be adjusted to pass smog test. The carb is no longer made and the replacement carbs do not pass California emissions standards.

I have tried to repair carb for many years and spent a lot of money. I do not want to sell my car. What can I do? Is a smog exemption possible?

thanks

Answer:

You can get your car registered with a "limited parts exemption" smog check certificate if the smog part which is causing your MGB to fail the smog test is not available AND not repairable. You will need to call the California's parts hotline at (800)622-7733. When you call them an agent will provide you the names and telephone numbers of suppliers that may have a carburetor for your MGB. If none of the suppliers have the carburetor you must call the parts locator people back and tell them the part is not available. They will then verify this and issue you a "Limited Parts Exemption". Once you receive the limited parts exemption. You will then take your MGB to one of California's Consumer Assistance and Referee Centers, where your car will be smog inspected to make sure no other problems exist, and in fact the part you can't find (in this case the carburetor) is the defective component causing your car to fail the smog test. The vehicle must pass all other aspects of the smog inspection before the state's smog referee will issue you a smog check certificate.

The next time your MGB needs a smog check you'll need to go over the whole process again. When the carburetor becomes available, you will need to install it.
