Smog Check Repair

2000 Toyota Camry failed after two years. Did I get scammed by the seller?

When I purchased the car less than two years ago it passed, but now all of a sudden it did not pass do you think that where I bought it from that they were paid to make it pass so I would buy it? I purchased it for my 18 year old son as a first car. I was wondering if you know how much it would cost to fix it? So it will pass? Or is it worth it to fix it as I paid only $6,000 for it when actually he was selling it for $10,000. I think he went down on the price because it was at a time when know one was purchasing cars do to the economy. The engine looked real clean and I thought I was getting a good deal it is real good on gas also. I mean there is a lot of smog checkers that charge you more to get it to pass. Do you think they could be crooks and they say it does not pass so they can make more money off you?

Answer:

Two years is quite a bit of time. An emission related problem may have simply developed since you purchased your son's Toyota. If we were talking about a few months, I'd think maybe something was going on, but in two year; who's to say something didn't break, after all your Camry is almost 10 years old. Don't get me wrong... This vehicle will last another 20 years, they are great cars but emissions problems are going to occur as they do with every Toyota and all cars in general.

Now, without assuming the worst (because there is no need to - cars fail the smog test for all sorts of reasons big and small) I'd recommend you have your Toyota diagnosed by a smog check repair mechanic. I do very much think it is worth fixing. I can't give you a price on what the repairs will cost because I don't know what's wrong with the car at this point, but I can let you know the average smog check repair costs $350.00. If this is all it costs to get your Toyota fixed, smogged and back on the road then you've got a good deal. We just want to make sure it's repaired right and the problem doesn't come back in two years. Best of luck!
