2002 Toyota 4Runner - How to get smog check done if I'm outside california

Hi - My registration renewal will be due in late August (and I will need a smog check), but I'm traveling around the country and won't be in California until early next year. How do I get a smog check done and renew my registration?

Mostly during my travels I will be in the states of Texas, Tennessee and Virginia and then in Mexico for a few months. Are there any California certified smog stations in any of these states?

Answer:

Do not obtain a smog inspection in another state; it will not be valid in California. Unless your Toyota 4Runner is in Nevada or Mexico, you DO NOT need to bring it back to California in order to complete your registration. Simply fill out and sign DMV's "Statement of Facts" form explaining that your vehicle is out of state and the registration tags will be mailed to wherever the car is currently located. You can obtain a "California DMV Statement of Facts" form by calling the California DMV at (800)777-0133 or online.
