1998 Dodge Dakota - How to fix Idle Air Control Unit

I own a 1998 Dodge Dakota. How do I fix the idle air control. I have gotten a check engine light trouble code of P0505 on my truck. I've replaced the idle air control unit 3 times and it still says their is a problem. The last repair station said they checked all the wirering for any shorts and hoses for leaks and everything was fine. They said to replace the idle air control valve. They said to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and then to connect the positive cable and negative cable together for 10 seconds and then to hook up the battery and the check engine light should be off and everything working but the check engine light is still on and the truck idles at 1800 RPM's now i dont know what else to do.

Answer:

The Idle Air Control Valve is controlled in steps (pulses) by the PCM, allowing it to count the number of cycles the IAC completes. Once a new IAC has been installed the step count must be reset. Follow these steps to reset your Dodge Dakota's PCM to allow for relearning:

1. Pull either battery cable off and wait 30 seconds, then reconnect.
2. Turn the ignition key on, count to ten, then start the engine. The IAC relearn procedure happens after the PCM memory has been erased within the first few seconds of key-on time. If the PCM is forced to try to support an idle before it learns the step count properly your Dodge will experience high or low idle speed.
