2002 Hyundai Elantra - Can't find aftermarket Catalytic Converter

Hello! I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra, and it would appear that my Catalytic Converter has died (I have a P0420 CEL error). However, there are NO aftermarket California-legal Cat Converters for this vehicle, and the OEM part is going to coast over $1000! Does California make any any allowance for this? I don't meet the low-income requirements for the CAP, but will failure of the smog check alone entitle me to the $500 credit? Thank you so very much for your time and consideration. John

Answer:

Once you apply for CAP and have your Hyundai's smog check failure is diagnosed by a Gold Shield smog station (at the State's expense) and it is determined that the fault is in fact the CAT, the State will pay the remainder of the $500.00 CAP dollars towards a new Catalytic Converter and ask you to pay the balance.

If you can not afford the balance you will need to submit to the State Smog Check Referee Office for a smog check waiver. A CAP Gold Shield will explain to process to you once your Hyundai Elentra is accepted into the program.
