I want to retire my 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage

I want to turn in my vehicle for the $1000 in CA, but my registration is about to expire on Dec 2. My CAP application will be in the mail on Nov 13, but don't think it will be approved before my reg expiration. It is also my required smog check year, so I'd like to avoid the smog/reg altogether. If I declare the car in non-operation status just until the app is approved, can I still do the turn in then? I've heard if it's non-op for less than 60 days, I can. Help!!

Answer:

You are correct. The State will allow up to 60 days of either, registration lapse or PNO.
