1997 Toyota Tacoma EO Number on Catalytic Converter Missing

My 1997 Toyota Tacoma truck recently failed the visual portion of my smog check at a star station because the smog check technician could not read an EO number on the catalytic converter. 5 years ago my catalytic was stolen and I had it replaced. It is my understanding that the laws have changed since then. I do not have the reciept.Do I need to replace the Catalytic converter? It passed fine...

Answer:

California's Air Resources Board has always required aftermarket emission parts, such as your Toyota Tacoma's Catalytic Converter poses an EO (Executive Order) number if being installed on a vehicle intended to be used on California public roadways. The difference is the Bureau of Automotive Repairs is now enforcing these laws very strictly; forcing smog technicians to make certain to inspect all suspect emission components for proper fit and use.

If you believe the CAT currently installed on your Toyota Tacoma is California legal, try to contact the manufacture and request documentation stating so. If the CAT is not California legal, and never had an EO number, then you may every well need to purchase a new California legal catalytic converter.
