Failed Smog Test on 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport

My Jeep Cherokee failed its smog check and the mechanic diagnosed the failure to a no-working (front)catalytic converter. The Jeep manufacturer no longer makes the part and we cannot find anyone else who has it either...what am I to do if I cannot repair the problem? Is there an exemption for individuals in my position? I already tried to find help via the CA DMV web site without luck. Thank you for your help.

Answer:

Your should call the California State Smog Check Referee's Office. They will help you find a catalytic converter for your Jeep Cherokee in order to bring it into compliance with state law.

If they are unable to find you the part, they may be able to issue you a "Limited Parts Exemption". In most cases the needed parts are found. You may contact the State Smog Check Parts locator by calling 800–622–7733.
