Why does my Dodge diesel need a smog check before the registration renewal date?

I have an early 2007 Dodge diesel pickup and I just received a notice to get a smog check, prior to renewing registration. Is this real or is it a DMV mistake?

Or have you received a specific request for a smog check not accompanied with a registration renewal notice.
