An aftermarket muffler will not cause a smog check failure. The muffler itself is not considered an emissions component. It is simply a noise reduction device. So long as the muffler does not disturb any exhaust emission component, such as the catalytic converter, it will not cause your Nissan Altima to fail the smog check.
