1987 Toyota Camry Vehicle Retirement

This may be a tricky question. My Toyota Camry passed its biennial smog inspection 1 year ago. Now I wanted to sell it, so I went for change ownership smog check and my Camry failed the smog test for elevated HC and fuel tank vapor leaks.

Can my Toyota be qualified for retirement now due to the smog check failure, or I should wait for next biennial smog test and fail it to qualify for retirement (assuming the program will be in force)?

Also, will this failure affect my “between the smog tests” registration in 3 month from now?

Note: The car has salvage title so no other retirement options can be used.

Kind regards,

Oleg T.

This is a tricky question indeed. To the best of our knowledge your Toyota Camry must fail its DMV required biennial smog inspection in order to be eligible for the CAP vehicle buy back program. You might want to verify this by calling the BAR at (800) 952-5210. In previous years the BAR would have allowed your Toyota Camry to be retired, for any reason and at anytime. After an overwhelming public response (and depleted funds) they reverted to the old way of requiring a failed smog check. This smog check failure should not effect your Toyota Camry's next smog check due date or requirement.
