Moving my Volkswagon GTI to San Diego from out of state. Will it pass smog check?

I have read that some cars can pass without an EGR valve if they have the right type of catalytic converter. How can I determine if this approach is possible for my car?

If my car doesn't pass and I find out that I can't get it to pass without lots of money, will a dealership in CA take my car as a trade in? If they do take it will it be for significantly less money?

If I buy a newer car (2000-2007) here in Wisconsin before I move, how can I determine if the car I buy will pass?

I would like advice in avoiding the following 2 situations:

1 - I drive my current car out there and have to buy a new one and can't get rid of it.

2 - I buy a newer car here and still have to pay a bunch of money to get it to pass once I get out there.

Answer:		All used vehicles brought in from out of state to California can pass California's smog inspection as long as the vehicle has not been tampered with, i.e. had the EGR valve removed, or Catalytic Converter cut off. I'm assuming your VW GTI was originally manufactured without an EGR valve. This is normal, and your Volkswagen should pass the California smog check, so long as it has been properly maintained. If it doesn't pass the smog check technically you can not sell it until it is repaired. Often the buyer will take responsibility of getting needed repairs and passing the test, however this will not defend you should the buyer choose to take you to small claims court in the event the repair costs are substantial.   As far as buying a newer model car before moving to California, you may; just ensure the vehicle is in good condition and mechanically sound. posted by SmogTips Support
