General Smog Check

2004 Chevy Silverado, why is it more expensive to smog?

Why is a truck or suv more expensive to smog test than a regular car? I've been quote $20.00 more to smog my truck then my passenger car.

Answer:

The inspection of a SUV or truck at times requires more effort in terms of locating certain emissions components during the visual portion of the smog check. Large vehicles require more resources during the EVAP portion of the smog check. Trucks and SUV often have larger fuel tanks then small and mid-size passenger cars, thus requiring more nitrogen during the EVAP inspection. Trucks and SUVs also place greater strain on the smog station's dynamometer. The chances of damaging the dynamometer's bearings while inspecting a heavy vehicle is greater. To recoup these costs smog stations will at times charge more to perform smog inspections on large trucks and SUVs.
