2004 Honda CRV Catalytic Converter Has No Numbers On It

I registered my salvaged 2004 Honda CRV vehicle last in 2012. Im trying to register it again this year and am being told that it would pass smog except that the catalytic converter doesn't have a number on it. There is no after market part for it and it will cost $1600 to get a new converter. I just lost my job, and cannot afford the converter. Should I go back to the smog center that passed it in 2012? If not, how can I file an extension until I get the money to buy the new catalytic converter?

Answer:

Since the start of the STAR smog check program and the increase in the fines a smog station may receive for improperly inspecting a vehicle, smog technicians are being extra careful to make sure a vehicle is equipped with the correct catalytic converter. Unfortunately returning to the smog station which passed your Honda CRV last inspection will more than likely do no good if the smog station intends on performing a legal smog check.

In order to obtain a smog check extension visit a local DMV branch. Explain you are unable to complete your Honda CRV's registration renewal due to smog test reasons. The DMV will give you a 30 day extension for a fee of $50.00.
