Failed Smog Test

1997 Toyota Camry Monitors Incomplete

I have a catalytic monitor incomplete and it won't pass the smog check. There are no trouble codes. It is a 1997 Toyota Camry.

I had a check engine light on before and I've been fixing all the problems myself. So I fixed the check engine light problem and the light is off now but the smog test still fails. I realized that the catalytic converter monitor was incomplete. I tried the driving pattern to complete the drive cycle and no luck, My tags are expired. Would I be able to get an extension?

Answer:

Since you've repaired the problem which was causing your 1997 Toyota Camry's check engine light, if you are certain your Camry has no other emission related faults, we have to assume the drive cycle pattern hasn't be followed accurately. We recommend completing the drive cycle a few more times.

We're going to indicate the drive cycle pattern below so that you may attempt it again. Ensure you begin with the engine cold and the fuel tank with between 1/4 to 3/4 gasoline.

Start the engine. Idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C and rear defroster on.

Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle.

Hold at a steady speed of 55 mph for three minutes.

Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking.

Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at ¾ throttle.

Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes.

Decelerate (coast down) to a stop without braking.

If all other emissions systems are functioning properly, completing the drive cycle above should get your 1997 Toyota Camry to complete the catalytic converter monitor. It won't hurt to go through the drive cycle 2 to 3 times, as it might be difficult to follow all the steps of the drive cycle accurately. Remember, be extra careful when performing drive cycles on public roadways.
