Buying a New 2014 Ford Focus From Out of State

If I buy a new 2014 Ford Focus not from California and try to move it to California and get it registered will I be able to? Will it pass a California smog inspection? I found a better deal for this car out of state.

Answer:

Be certain the Ford Focus you purchase from out of state is 50-State Emissions Certified (California), as opposed to 49-State Emissions Certified (Federal). If it is only 49-State emissions legal, you will not be able to import it to California (or obtain California vehicle registration) until it is considered a USED vehicle; when it is at least one year old or has at least 7500 miles on it. If this Ford Focus is 50-State Emissions Legal, meaning it is California Emissions Certified, you may import it and get it registered California.
