General Smog Check

Converting Single Exhaust to Dual Exhaust

My names Josh, I was wondering if I could add another exhaust system to my truck. I already have a cherry bomb extreme with a 3.5 inch dump. My existing exhaust pipes come from both sides of my engine and forms a 'Y' shape and connect together in the middle. I was wondering if i could eliminate the Y part and put another cherry bomb extreme with another 3.5 inch dump and a catalytic converter. If you could tell me if it would pass smog that would be great. Oh and my engine is a stock 350 engine 5.7L.

Answer:

Removing the Y pipe and converting your truck's current "single" exhaust system into a "dual" system will cause a smog check failure.

The smog technician will consider the modification you've made as a "tamper". You must keep the original exhaust system configuration designed by your vehicle's manufacturer. Even when converting to a dual system and adding a second catalytic converter lowers emissions, the fact that the conversion is not factory will cause the vehicle to fail the smog inspection.
