Failed Smog Test

2002 VW Jetta 4 cyl Automatic Trouble Code P0740 TCC Torque Converter Clutch did not pass smog check.

2002 VW Jetta 4 cyl Automatic Trouble code P0740 TCC torque converter clutch. My car did not pass smog test because of this. Mechanic wants to repair my transmission. The cost of a new trans is over $3500.00 dollars. I cannot afford this. The car runs ok except for this code. What can I do to get my car to pass. The car has 137000 miles.

Answer:

Unfortunately the only thing you can do to get your VW Jetta to pass the smog inspection is the get rid of the TCC P0740 trouble code; and that's by fixing the transmission. I can only recommend you shop around for the best price to fix your VW's transmission problem. Depending on the overall condition of the transmission, you may not necessarily need an entire transmission rebuild or a new one. A transmission shop may be able to fix only the torque converter clutch portion of your Jetta's trans.
