Toyota Catalytic Converter Does Not Match Engine Class

I have a 1998 Toyota Corolla 1.8L. The under hood emissions label says this is a federal emission 49-state certified vehicle. Engine class WTXV01.8XBA. What model of CAT is needed to pass the smog test? And, if there are no CATs listed on the ARB website, what do I do? Do I have the wrong emissions label or illegal Catco CAT, part number 612005?

Answer:

We recommend ensuring your Toyota Corolla's emission label matches your Corolla's engine. You should read the engine classification identified on the label. If the label is mismatched, you may order a new label from the dealership (though it is not necessary to have an emission label in order to pass a smog check).

If the label is correct and matches the engine, then you'll need the correct Federal catalytic converter installed in order to pass the smog test. Contact a local auto parts store, muffler and exhaust shop, or certified smog check repair station to find out how you may obtain a new OEM CAT designed for Toyota, and approved by the California Air Resources Board (ARB).

The catalytic converter must have a stamped EO (executive order) number on it. If you are unable to find the right CAT for your Corolla, we recommend you contact the State Smog Check Parts Locator. The Part Locator Hotline might be able to help you find a California complaint (CARB Approved) catalytic converter. You may contact the State Smog Check Parts locator by calling 1-800-622-7733.
