Moving From Canada with 98 Dodge Dakota Will It Pass Smog?

Hi, I'm moving from Canada to Los Angeles soon and I recently bought a used, 1998 Dodge Dakota Truck. The previous owner says it has a custom exhaust. Do you think that means I will fail a smog test? And does having a V8 engine have any impact on that?

Answer:

Online modifications to a vehicle's exhaust after the catalytic converter and post oxygen sensor are not allowed in California and will cause a smog check failure. Furthermore, this particular 1998 Dodge Dakota may not be emissions equipped to U.S. specifications. A vehicle not built to meet U.S. specifications must be imported as "gray-market". This can be extremely expensive and time consuming. Review what the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has to say on this subject, as CBP controls which vehicles may be brought into the United States. Your intended vehicle must clear customs before it can be registered in any state. The costs for a laboratory to modify and certify the emissions and safety equipment on a gray-market vehicle are considerable. Check the vehicle's underhood emissions label to verify its emission certification.
