Failed Smog Test

Check engine light is on and trouble code PO179 present. What is P0179 and how can I fix it?

my car has fault code PO179. The smog technician couldn't tell me what the code meant. How can I find out what it is and how do I fix it?

Answer:

Trouble code P0179 indicates a problem with your car's fuel composition sensor. The fuel composition sensor checks for contaminated fuel. Trouble code P0179 can be triggered by in fact contaminated fuel, a bad fuel composition sensor, damaged sensor harness or bad connection, and in the worst case scenario, a defective engine control computer (ECC).

We recommend first replacing your car's fuel filter and then refilling with fresh fuel. Drive your vehicle for at least one week. If the check engine light does not turn off you will need to have a smog check repair station conduct a diagnosis of your car's trouble light code P0179 failure using diagnostic tools.
