Emissions Component

2004 Dodge Ram 5.7 with free flow exhaust and K&N air filter. Will it pass the smog check?

I have installed a cat-back free flow exhaust, and a K&N air filter in the stock airbox. Will my truck pass inspection? Should I clean and re-oil the air filter, or reinstall the original air filter? The catalytic converter is still there, and no other mods have been made, all smog equipment has always been in place.

Answer:

Yes. Your Dodge Ram should pass the smog check with the Free Flow Exhaust and K & N Air Filter so long as its emissions fall within California requirements. The components you've mentioned are legal. So long as the exhaust system modification is after the CAT and you've made no modifications to the exhaust system other then adding the free flow system after the CAT, you'll have no problem. As far as the air filter... Since you've made no change to the air filter box and have only change the filter, that too will not cause a smog check problem. We do recommend however that you switch back to the stock air filter just for security. Your Dodge Ram's computer is programmed to accept data from the Mass Air Flow sensor matching air flow through a stock air filter.
