1998 Toyota pickup truck needs new timing belt. Won't pass smog check.

Can that statement of needing to replace timing chain and gears be the reason? The car runs great. No hesitation, has good power, etc. I have owned cars, and don't see how his claim be true the Toyota trucks performance, gas mileage etc.

Answer:		Yes, this makes sense. The timing mark will show correct (5 BTDC), but your Toyota will run poorly. This is a pretty good indication of a slipped timing belt, and yes, your Toyota will not pass the smog test if the timing mark is off; even though with the timing mark being off your Toyota truck runs great. posted by SmogTips Support
