Failed Smog Test

1989 Toyota Pickup with aftermarket exhaust headers can't pass smog test. Tech says not smog legal.

My Toyota truck currently has headers instead of the stock exhaust manifolds. The smog components bolt onto the headers just as they did on the stock exhaust. I have passed the smog test for the past ten years but now I am told that the stock exhaust manifolds will have to be installed because of a new law enacted in 2010. Is this true ? If the truck passes all the emission tests what differance could the type of exhaust possibly make. The headers are calif. legal and I have had them on for 10 years.

Answer:

The exhaust headers you've installed on your Toyota pickup truck must have an EO number affixed to them. All California legal exhaust headers have a stamp on them with an Executive Order number indicated they are legal for sale and use in California. Older aftermarket components may not have a stamp but will be shipped with paperwork indicating the model, design, and EO number; which you would provide the smog technician before the smog check proceeds.

At this point you can return to the emission test center with your header's documentation and ask for a re-test. There may or may not be a fee involved for the retest.
