1986 Saab 900 Turbo - Repairs over $500 & won't qualify for financial assistance

Due to the age and type of car I have - I am anticipating possibly not passing my smog test this year. It's also extremely difficult finding mechanics and can and will work on my car nowadays. What options do I have if my repairs exceed $500.00 (which is most likely going to be the case) and I do not qualify for financial assistance? I have heard something about a one year waiver in order to get the car repaired or replaced. Can you tell me anything about this?

I appreciate any assistance you can offer me. Thank you.

Answer:

Unfortunately the only options you have (if you are not eligible for the CAP repair program because you're not low income), is to retire your Saab to the state for $1000.00 dollars (which you can do at any time and for any reason) or to repair it yourself and get it to pass smog. There is a one-time 2 year smog check exemption, but it only applies after either you or the state has spent at least $500.00 to try and repair your Saab, and it still fails. At that time you can apply for smog exemption. If approved you'll receive a one time smog check exemption, good for 2 years.
