General Smog Check

My 1996 Honda civic coupe 1.6L VTEC 5 spd failed the monitor read out part of smog.

I bought my honda from a local tow yard lien sale in February and the check engine lights always been on. being a lein sale, it requires smog. The diagnostic readout read knock sensor. I replaced it, check engine light went off for 3-4 days, and 400 miles later, went for smog test. It failed 3 things so I was told to drive it 40 miles at steady speed and bring it back. It failed the monitor readout in 4 areas. Would the knock sensor plug cause this? I replaced that today and lights still off but only driven 35 miles since replaced. Should the plugs be replaced before I try to re-smog it? I've put 10,000 on it in exactly 6 mos and its never left me stranded. How many temporary registration permits are you allowed on a lien sale vehicle your progressively trying to smog and all fees are paid?

Answer:

The drive time is actually closer to 200 miles and it needs to be a combination of highway and street driving. 4 monitors not ready means you will need to drive for at least a week in city traffic and freeways. As far as temp tags, the DMV usually allows up to 3 months before they ask you to non-op your vehicle and tow it to a repair shop.
